In the course of working on my dissertation, I created a large number of examples of groups via group presentations. Since then I have been fascinated by the algorithms involved in combinatorial group theory.
I enjoy programming; my work in Salomon Brothers involved creating and maintaining financial models in the APL programming language.
I have tried to program some group theoretical algorithms in APL, but have found that the time and memory constraints were too limiting.
Since then I have learned C++, and feel competent programming in that language. I also do a good deal of programming in Perl and Python.
I enjoy working with financial mathematics, so after leaving Salomon Brothers I pursued actuarial certification. In 1992 I became an Associate Actuary.
I still love to program and never have enough time in the day for it. Lately I have been reading up on XML.
I like reading and talking about mathematics, and without being an expert, I enjoy abstract algebra, topology, and probability.
