FVCN Sluggers Take District Title with Standout Player

Softball isn't necessarily a young man's game. When the FVCN men's softball team took the Philadelphia District tournament recently by beating Ephrata, Burlington and Lansdale, the player who stood out was the oldest one, Charles Clark, Sr., at 71. He went 9 for 11 in the tournament.

"It was a great day," he said. "I guess maybe you hate to admit you're old."

But he says he has a more serious reason for being on the team.

"This is a great way for me to get to know the younger fellows. They treat me nice."

He's been playing on the team for more than 6 years. He played catcher at the tournament, but sometimes he plays first base.

And he says he has no plans to slow down. He's geared up for a tournament in Pottstown Aug. 27-28.

"This is kind of my hobby in a way. I get over the winter by looking forward to the spring and playing ball."

He also wanted to make sure all the players got credit for the victory.
